Shades of Gray
Hailing from Australia, Shades of Gray aka Michal Schwa and Nick West, are a force to be reckoned with. Their productions have been supported by the likes of Richie Hawtin, Shuri-i-Kan, Miss Kittin, Jimpster, Pezzner and Laurent Guarnier. On top of that they have their well respected Beef Records label and are soon to drop their first artist album.
1) Influences?
Everything and everyone who is around us… From nature to music and our families.
2) Tell us about your DJ/production history.
We have meet in 2006 and started producing together because we felt like it. There were no huge plans behind our collaboration at the start. We just felt inspired from each other so we did what we did. Before that Michal had been djing since about 2000 and Nick was producing all sorts of electronic and acoustic music.
3) How would you describe your style?
Deep, soulful but still dancefloor oriented underground house music.
4) What is your preferred media/tech?
Ableton for sequencing, Pro Tools for mixing… and lots of Hardware synths to tweak the buttons!
5) Current influences?
Revenge, Jamie Jones, Hot Natured, Dj Koze, Axel Boman, Mark Farina, Pezzner, The Timewriter, Mathias Aguayo, Maya Jane Coles and heaps more…
6) Favourite clubs?
Panorama Bar and Berghain all the way!
